Golf continues to expand in Palm Springs. The city and surrounding area now boasts hundreds of courses, about half of them accessible to the public.
Participants in the TTG/Virgin Atlantic Pre-Pow Wow Challenge played four courses during their stay – a practice round at Tahquitz Creek followed by three competitive rounds at Desert Willow Golf Resort, Oak Valley Golf Club and the Landmark Golf Club, where the world’s top players battle it out each November for huge prize money in the televised Skins Game golfing shoot-out.
With other major golf facilities in the area including the five PGA West courses, former Skins Game host course Bighorn and two Westin Mission Hills courses, Palm Springs can lay claim to being one of the top golfing destinations in the US.
Golfers typically play five or six different courses, and they have a choice of top courses. Depending on the facility, they are up there in terms of quality with Arizona.
Whereas here you are just two hours from Los Angeles, and it’s very easy to connect to Las Vegas.
Courses are keen to attract British golfers, particularly in the summer low season and shoulder periods when prices drop dramatically.
The club was beginning to get into packages with hotels, and he hoped the fact that Colin Montgomerie was the defending Skins champion would be a draw for British golfers.
Competition Spurs Massive Progress
The destination and the golf have come on in leaps and bounds. There is such a lot of competition that the quality has improved and the price is good value. The nearest alternative golfing destination is Scottsdale, and Palm Springs seems much cheaper.
Prices and Quality will Take UK Visitors Aback
From a golfing perspective, Palm Springs is exceptional. Scottsdale has priced itself beyond the British visitor, whereas Palm Springs has rates that will attract and surprise visitors. Landmark was something really special. Oak Valley was totally different and exceptional value, yet still a great challenge. Many destinations have over-priced golf for the UK market, but Palm Springs has kept the rates at sensible levels.
Top Golf, Family Feel, and Good Hotel Deals
The golf has been amazing. Nowhere else would you match the variety of courses in Palm Springs. The service is good and the courses convenient to get to. It is not as upmarket as I expected – it has quite a family feel and is safe and friendly. It has huge potential for the British market. You can get good deals from hotels in the summer.
